Review

"Simonet's plotting is superb, and he sharply writes two unique characters, whose sparring will be as exciting to readers as it is to Jason and Meili. A fresh story, boldly told." ―Booklist, starred review"Simonet holds his cards very close to the vest throughout the narrative, creating Jason as a credible and sympathetic victim of some pretty rough circumstances as well as a righteous defender of endangered women. [A] suspenseful read a psychologically haunting finish." ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "Instead of delivering a clear-cut moral and tidy resolution, debut author Simonet leaves readers to decide whether Jason’s actions are justified and whether he is a criminal, a hero, or a victim." ―Publishers Weekly"A page-turning, mind-twisting adventure that illuminates the complexity of male violence― Jason’s story gripped me by the lapels and refused to let me look away." ―Dashka Slater, award-winning author of The 57 Bus“Wilder is unique, innovative, edgy. A powerful mixture of funny and serious that will jolt you into a deeper understanding of the relentless longing for love that we carry within us.” ―Francisco Stork, award-winning author of Marcelo in the Real World

DNF at 17%My reoccurring thought: What the flark? Wilder was crazy and extremely convoluted. It was often difficult to follow their conversations, because they were random and bounced all over the place. I could tell the author was trying to build suspense, and I'm sure there would have been a big reveal later on, but I didn't want to stick around to find out.Melissa, Meili, or whatever her name actually is, was condescending and evasive. The girl's secrets had secrets. She's supposedly in danger, but seems to be the only person that doesn't care. She's brash and abrasive, combative and cruel. “You’d do alright in a thong, wouldn’t you? Make a fortune dancing at a gay club. Is there one in town?”Neither character was relatable, but Wilder was desperate and eager to please the girl he'd just met. He knows nothing about Meili, but he's willing to do whatever she asks him to. I think he would have chopped of his hand just to see her smile for a few seconds. She seriously treated him like garbage, and he kept trying to make her happy. "And you’re very cute for blushing. I mean, it would be cute if you were twelve. At your age, it’s a bit sad, isn’t it?” Why was he so obsessed with her from the beginning? He should have had more respect for himself.Wilder and Meili had a toxic and extremely unhealthy relationship. She would ignore him at school, turn down his offer to hang out, and then show up unexpectedly at his house. She was constantly changing her mind, and I honestly don't think even she knew what she really wanted. However, she was more than happy to take someone else down with her. Also, where the hell did Manny come from? He was abusive and threatening, but only because he "cared" about Melissa. Apparently, the two share the same dark secret, so he's being a protective douche canoe, but dude was aggressive. He also went from being Wilder's best buddy to his worst enemy in a single conversation. It was like watching someone play ping pong, but with a grenade instead of a ball.In the end, my annoyance outweighed my curiosity. I was tempted to skip to the end just to see what their secrets were, but I had no desire to share that experience with them.

This book certainly kept my interest. Jason Wilder in effect lived up to his name of Wilder; an unfortunate incident involving fire proved costly to him and had devastating repercussions. Wilder more or less lives on his own. Wilder's mother and current boyfriend have relocated to the warmer climes of Florida and the father is out of the picture. Due to the fire incident, Jason spends his 12th grade year in the Detention Room, colloquially known as "the Rubber Room" by students.Enter Meili, often called "Melissa" by teachers and others who don't know her. A dark and interesting charcacter, Meili has a reputation and a taste for danger. She allegedly broke another pupil's finger and she keeps dodgy company. Naturally these two connect and Meili takes her new friend down some dangerous paths and into dangerous places involving other dangerous people.Despite her dangerous nature, Meili could be funny, such as when she challeged other students who made racist remarks about her being Chinese. She is an interesting character, reminiscent of Barry Lyga's Kyra in "Goth Girl."One can't help but wonder how readers would interpret this story had it been told from the points of view of the two protagonists. There are adult issues and foul language, so I don't recommend this particular book for students under 15 or 16.There were places where I felt the story lagged and dragged and there were points where I had to push myself to finish it. Still and all, it was worth the read.

3.5 stars. This book was highly entertaining, and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of Jason Wilder and Meili; however, I felt like it was really lacking a punch or sense of urgency the first half of the book. This really led me to be underwhelmed and I struggled staying committed to the text. The second half had much better pacing and conflicts, and I felt a stronger sense of urgency about Jason's issues related to his nonexistent parents and how they contributed to his issues in school.. Plus, the book has a seriously sexy element about it...the nerdy boy who really isn't all that bad, falling for the exotic bad girl.I do think it is a bit too racy for my students, yet I think the themes are perfect for so many of my students, especially those at-risk. I like that Jason is brave and puts his heart out there, even though it is obviously been broken by his parents. I think it is a solid book, but probably best for ages 16 and up.

First, what I like about this book -- the two main characters, Jason and Meili, are well-developed characters. I really liked them and had empathy for both of them. I cared about what happened to him. Second, the ending is disturbing but true to the character and it also makes you question the telling of the whole story. It seems very true-to-life. And it makes you wonder what will happen when Jason finally sees Meili again. Third, the telling of the story from Jason's point of view really makes you feel like every time he throws a punch the punch is justified. What I don't like about the book -- the language and the sex. I know the language might be realisitic but I think the book could have been just has powerful without the bad language. And the sex details didn't have to be included. If these things weren't in the book I would feel quite comfortable recommending it to my English Teacher Husband for it to be read in his junior high classes. But because of the language and the sex I will not even recommend it to his high school students. I might be naive but I think it could have been written just has powerfully without the explicit sex and foul language. This author is an incredible writer.
