No spoilers here, you will have to read it to experience the twists and turns Nathan Bay takes his readers through in Young Forever. I will just say, I was on the edge of my seat at every page turn. Tap, tap, tap!
Whoa! What a roller coaster ride! Love it.
I enjoyed the romantic build up between the main characters, which included a nice mix of their fantasies and insecurities. The sex scenes were well written and hot. The darker scenes were also well written. I read the first half of the book on a plane flight. It made a long flight seem short!
very good unique story. I loved the initial meeting between Ben and Roger. It was like being right there with them the entire night. I wish the ending hadn't been so abrupt, though.
*spoiler alert* Revealing info ahead!Overall, it was a good story, just not exactly what I had been expecting. I had hoped for more from the missing men's POV, not just one chapter of them getting taken. I wanted more that revealed what happened to them to make the story a bit more exciting.It seems the story could have had a bit more to it, and left some things unanswered. What happened after Roger's ex's threat to take away custody? And why was the ex so suddenly angry and jealous? What happened to Ben? How did he recover from his injury?And once the bad guy was apprehended...? Way, way to easy. Where did Peter get a gun? There was no mention of him having one before he pulled it out. And once the group subdued Max, it seemed odd that he was so docile and talkative, and revealed so much to them. Like the typical bad guy who has to gloat over his plans to the good guy who wants to catch him. And secret passages are just that, secret. To happen to stumble upon just one, and that one being the right one that led to Max's embalming room? Sure.And... it was mentioned twice that Ben was twenty-four... but then when he went home with Max, he said he was thirty-four. So... did Ben lie to Roger earlier on, or did the author make a mistake? Was it all part of Ben's hiding of his past to lie to Roger about his age? I have my suspicions that that was what it was, but once again, things are left unsaid and unanswered.These are just a few things that made me shrug and say, eh, as I finished reading it. I had hoped for a more exciting story, but was just disappointed.
I was really enjoying this story until it ended. It has suspense, danger, paranormal activities, a little blood and gore, murder, secrets, and lies combined with a romance story. I loved the story until the very end. I rated the (audio)book 4 stars instead of 5 because it leaves the fate of one of the MCs hanging at the end. I wanted to know if the MCs lived happily ever after or not. Either way would have been acceptable considering this is a horror story. (I wouldn't necessarily expect an HEA in this genre.) But I wanted a definitive answer.The narration was great. I would definitely listen to this narrator again.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
After a difficult break up, Roger finds himself alone on his 40th birthday and decides to celebrate it anyway at a local bar. There he meets Ben and the two have an instant connection. Meanwhile there is a serial killer on the prowl who is targeting young gay men. The first half of the book had me engrossed and it flew by, but the second half felt rushed and there were several loose ends which I personally would have liked to see the outcome of. The author’s writing style is good though and I’ll read more of his books in the future.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Roger meets Ben at a club on his fortieth birthday, and also meets Ben's friends who significantly added to the plot element towards the end of the story. There's a serial killer in town and gay men are disappearing. I enjoyed the author's style of writing, and how the characters eventually intertwine and my questions are answered. I must say, that it's not often that I read about a mortician, so that idea was very unique and imaginative. The characterization is excellent, and I was definitely immersed in this thrilling read (a real nail biter, even though I don't bite mine) =). The only thing that bothered me was the somewhat abrupt ending, since I really wanted a bit more. I don't want to spoil this too much, so all I'll say is I wanted a bit more with the two main characters. Ultimately, this was quite an awesome read. :)

I like everything about this book. It's a nice size, it is made well, the tabs are easy to read, each set of letters has 3 tabs assigned (each tab contains 6 places for websites/passwords to be entered), and there are sections in the back of the book to keep track/notes regarding software, wireless, router, etc. The lines for writing are about the same size as notebook paper. Each individual section allows for the website name, username, and 5 lines for dates/passwords. -I will probably use the extra dates/password lines for notes since I write my passwords in pencil rather than ink. I've added a few pictures in hopes of showing the size vs an IPhone 6s, the writing area, and a view of the tabs.
I purchased this logbook to replace the little address book I was carrying as a portable password book. Although I love the looks of this book, the sturdy hard cover, and having more pages for entry, I do feel that the entry slots themselves could use some editing. Currently each page has blocks for 3 websites/username/5 date & password entries. My preference would be to omit one of the 5 date/pw entry lines and replace it with a blank line to use for miscellaneous information. (E.g., I note clues to remember information like "dad's mom's middle name", or dividend miles number, or a contact phone number). The pages are divided by two alphabet letters (e.g., AB, CD) with about 8 pages for each. I decided to circle the letter of the alphabet on the tab and split them further into A, B, C, D to make it easier for me to quickly find.A plus is that in the back of the book there are pages to note software license number, purchase/subscription license dates, monthly fee. There are another couple of pages for Broadband Modem (model, serial #, address, URL, etc) and Router/Wireless Access Point (again, so you can track your info) Three pages are dedicated to WAN settings, LAN settings and Wireless settings. And finally, at the very back are 4 pages for Notes.
Good size (easy to hide), 5 passwords per site, and plenty of room per letter of the alphabet. Some of the various reviews of similar products indicate the desire that every logbook have ever possible feature, somehow be a great price, and somehow not be the size of a novel. This one does a great job and meets all my needs.
I bought this password book as a present for Christmas, but I liked it so much, I went back and bought another one for myself. Love that after I took the sleeve off the cover, it looks like any ordinary notebook. Hiding in plain sight. Now, I can keep things organized in alphabetical order. The lines are not too crammed together, and there are five lines of passwords for each entry in case we change the passwords. Great, because not all password books share that feature.In addition to the alphabetical tabs, the book includes sections in the back for logging information on software (license number, subscription fees, etc.), broadband modem settings, router settings, and other notes.
After losing all my passwords on a digital source, I decided to go old fashioned tech with this logbook. It is just what I wanted and needed! Nice leather outer, organized inner. The perfect answer to keeping all those passwords straight.
I had previously bought a similar password logbook and started to use it, but when I saw the attractive tan cover on this version, I decided to buy it and give up on the other one.Unfortunately, the design of the pages poorly planned. Besides providing a place to enter the URL, username, and password, it has 4 more lines for updated passwords, leaving very little space to write anything else. Other password logbooks leave blank lines for notes, which are useful for those questions and answers like "Where was your father born?" Sometimes I have been forced to change my password because I couldn't remember the exact answers I gave to the questions (e.g. New York, New York, NY; New York City). There is no space to write this information, so I consider the book useless, even though it is pretty.Also, it is not spiral bound, so it doesn't lie flat.
I got this to see if it would help me to keep all my passwords, etc. straight! It has worked WONDERFULLY well!!!! I don't have to "guess" any more or worry about writing it down when it changes and then loosing the info! Everything is in one place and one place only and its all very easy to find!
A nice looking Book, well made and a great concept in this crazy world of passwords for everything, My only con is that you need to have handwriting that can legibly write tiny letters to get all usernames and password in the allotted stay. The pro is that the book is small enough to be used where ever you are,

About the Author
Evan Dorkin (born April 20, 1965) is an American comics artist and writer. His most well-known works are the comic books Milk and Cheese and Dork. This book is not a parody. It is an indictment. I have met the Eltingville club; at my worst moments I have been the Eltingville club. This book is an insider's look at everything wrong with fandom today, and it needs to be read because it doesn't glorify or excuse the club and their awful, sociopathic lifestyle: it just shows it as the ugly mess it is.
The Eltingville Club... four teenage outcast nerds with a deep obsession with fandom before it became mainstream. From the off-the-cuff esoteric references, to their ridiculous air of erudition (to legitimize the fact they are grown men playing with children's toys and reading comics) and the way all four of them will defend canon as fervently as a samurai defends his master, it is a scathing indictment of fandom in general.Between the laughs, nostalgia and the silly drama, there's a profound sadness here. Especially in the final issue. These boys are essentially throwing their lives away being ultra-consumers of the geek culture. Something that should be an accent in their life is in fact their whole lives. And as the boys creep towards middle age, we see they aren't changing. They're going to be the same man-children their whole lives. With one exception, and even his redemption isn't a sure thing.But it is hilarious, inventive, entertaining and very well drawn. Evan Dorkin explores different settings and conflicts with these four obnoxious fandom crusaders, and every time it feels fresh and funny.The hardcover is well constructed, the pages crisp, the printing top-notch. Very, VERY happy with this one.
"The Eltingville Club" is not a comic book. Instead it is a grim,lusterless, pizza stained, comedic mirror starring at ugly side of fandom and revealing the pasty, malnourished, rude, belligerent, socially inept, unabashedly grizzly basement dwellers that lie within. Comicbook artist Evan Dorkin pulls no punches in his black and white inked critique of the people that turn a fun, casual hobby into a godawful, gate keeping, life swallowing nightmare. Every overzealous act of fandom depicted by Eltingville Club members is not exaggerated as Dorkin makes it out to be, and the crazy thing is that the comic stills hits the nail pretty hard on the head in 2016.Evan Dorkin truly has a mind from future, as almost every act from the book mirrors acts committed by today's "Super Fans"; from insane hour long binges of television shows, rage fueled rants on social media sites regarding comics and television, and awful gate keeping that dictates who can and can't been in the fandom.The Eltingville Club is truly both a love letter and warning regarding fans and all of their craziness.
Outstanding work as always. All the great early stuff is still awesome. I really enjoyed the final chapter of the club even if I am embarrassed that it took me two years after publication to finally read it. I still consider myself very lucky to have gotten a signed Milk & Cheese piece of art from Evan himself at one of his last SDCC appearances.If you like irreverent humor then you will love this book, it really spears the annoying side of geek culture right in the balls.
Yup, this is what we're like.
Cant beat Evan Dorkin for hammering the good and bad of geek mentality and culture. I am always amused and moved by his observations. One of us, one of us, gooble gobble.
If you're a fan of bitchy elitist fans getting their comeuppance and virtually destroying everything in your path you might like this book.

This collection of tales from the cockpit includes gems with titles taken from pop culture: `Denali Mountain High'; `Zen and the Art of Aircraft Maintenance'; `The Loon is a Harsh Mistress,' you get the idea. These are satisfying, instructive, often inspiring tales, all with an undercurrent of some kind. Most of the time that subtle theme lurking below the text concerns the vagaries of the aviation game, not the dangers of it that the public focuses on but the `flyin' biz' chatter that only a pilot can relate to, but the public `inquiring minds' love to know. The end result is the perfect flow of excitement, learning and sharing from page to page.If you haven't read "There I Wuz!", then you're really missing out. I'm personally an aviation nerd, but even my family enjoyed reading passages and they sparked a conversation about aviation in a way nothing really has before.So cheers, Eric, for helping to expand my knowledge, save me from boredom, and allow me to share our aviation passions with family and friends more easily!
I finished this book in one sitting, minus the time I spent boarding my deadhead flight. This book will make you laugh (I did), but will also hit you in your heart (I teared up). As a fellow airline pilot I would have struggled to make one of the announcements he made and for the same reason. The book does an excellent job of portraying the nice sides as well as the "warts" of aviation, and in particular being an airline pilot. Even the bits of fiction throw you into the action and unless it was specifically stated you would never know that it is fiction. Though I have been flying for far less time than Cap'n Aux and haven't had the broad range of experiences, I can relate to the stories. And yes, if you ask a pilot, you will get a love story. Mine started when I was 9, and I remember as it was yesterday. As well as my first solo flight.
It will make you laugh, cry, laugh-cry (yes, there is such a thing!) and gape in awe till you are well over and done with the book. You'll find yourself talking about it, remembering stories and claiming them to be your very own. Good instruction on how to achieve control of your life with maximum charity possible toward self and others. Christian counsellor Gregory Popcak gives practical advice on how to decipher your own motives and the real motives of others so as to avoid counter productive strategies in interpersonal relationships. I like this approach because it isn't about putting down and insulting others who are causing you grief (maybe short term satisfaction but a failure by any other measure). Also the author counsels on how to recognize limits to getting along with tough actors and he suggests ways to minimize contact when all of the common sense approaches are not working well or at all.
Could be a little smoother in the writing, particularly in the beginning, but chalk full of great advice gleamed from decades of experience in his counseling practice. The exercises are daunting, but helpful. Best advice for me... Don't offer to bring the potato salad if you haven't been invited to the party! Game changer for me!
I love to hear DR Popcak and his wife on the radio and was excited to get this book. But for me it's a one size fits all approach so the solution did not work for me.
Difficult to read for me. I really like Dr. Popcak and his wife Lisa.

First off, this book is well-written. Mr. Hernandez does a good job of explaining the "why" behind his explanations. He also provides tips that just seem to make sense. He advises that a table have a name that is plural, because each record is one "instance" of the data related to the table. As an example, a table called CarColors would have several rows, each containing one car color.My only real criticisms are:1. That he did not go enough into effectively indexing, applying primary/foreign keys, and applying constraints.2. There was not enough discussion of the various "normalized" forms, when they should be used, and so forth. This is covered in a "flyover" manner that makes sense, but perhaps a more "in-depth" discussion of normalized forms is beyond the scope of the book.I felt like I knew most of the information, but I didn't feel this book was a waste of money, as many of his "common sense" approaches I will utilize in my own DB designs in the future.
Thus far I see no difference between this and the 2nd Edition, so if you already have that version you don't need this one. That being said, it doesn't make this edition any less deserving of five stars. My professor, a full time Software Architect, recommended this book to me four years ago. Now, as a successful Software Developer, I'm recommending it as well. Based on my experience, this book covers everything one needs to know about database design.
I found this book very thorough at an introductory level and well written. I think someone with no database experience at all could read this and help with database design. The only criticism I have is the verbosity. Some things are repeated or can be assumed.This book does not get into normalization or any details, which I liked.
I like that book. It was easy to read, unfortunately there is to much of copy paste. I would rate it 5 stars if book took just 300 pages, seriously there is not much in order to make 600 pages. But approach brought by author is interesting, anyway I would like to ask the question. How good does this approach fit at 2018 with agile, scrum? I am not sure that I'll get back to read this book one more time, which is really important sign for me, maybe because it is easy book. What I don't like very much, author mention that competitor authors don't know something, well...
This book provides the basic concepts for good relational database design. It is structured in a very easy to read format. It clearly walks you thought design objectives and defining tables, keys, fields, table relationships, as well as business rules. Chapter 14 is an interesting chapter titled "Bad Design - What Not to Do".
I wish more technical primers were written like this. All new terms are clearly explained.
No, this is not the book for you if you have extensive experience in software design and have already absorbed the basic concepts of database design by osmosis.This is a book for "mere mortals," just like it says. I'm a reasonably smart, reasonably well-educated person who had some computer experience, but didn't even really know what a relational database was. Through circumstances too odd to mention, I was given primary responsibility for designing a commercial web application.I read this book cover to cover, and designed the database that became the core of the product. The product actually works, and seems to be selling. Later in the development cycle, I worked with a brilliant MIT-trained software engineer, and he found my basic db design just ducky.I definitely owe Mr. Hernandez a beer. Figured writing this review was a reasonable substitute.
Michael Hernandez does a great job of explaining how the relational model works, and how a database should be designed from start to finish. Most of us will probably not follow his advice, though.If you do decide to follow his advice, then be prepared for a very lengthy trip when designing your DBs. I tried on my first DB and found that the company I was designing the DB for started to get slightly irritated. This is because in this book Michael suggests you have a full blown manager and or user meeting with virtually every single change you make (also meetings for requirements, ideas, characteristic identification, user input meetings, manager meetings... oh look, a change happened, now we have to go through all of the same meetings again... and again... and... >yawn<... every other page in this book suggests another meeting). I must have had 25-30 meetings total, which just isn't necessary. Also, there is all sorts of spec sheets you should fill out for every single aspect of the database. I would probably just use a modeling tool (such as Visio) instead of going through this daunting task (I would have had to fill out over 300 spec sheets just for the fields!... it was a big DB)Although his way of designing is probably the way you should really go, I found that designing a sound database doesn't require quite so much work. You can do most of the design process if you have a good modeling tool, which is what I ended up doing and my DB turned out quite well (you still should conduct meetings, but not for every single aspect of the database... your clients will begin to think you have no idea what you're doing). However, this book pounds the relational design in your head so much, that you can't help but get over the tough learning curve of how a relational database really should be designed.

This book really opened my eyes to 1. Why people come to America illegally, 2. What people will do out of desperation to help their families, and 3. How governments in both Mexico and the US have failed these individuals. This book is sad and sometimes painfully graphic to read, but especially in today’s political climate should be required reading.
Urrea tells the story of a group of men who risked their lives trying to enter the US - illegally, a journey that was tragically fatal for half of them. In the process he exposes the culture, the policies, the institutions and the people involved in immigration on our southern border. The information he shares is well documented. It reveals the hardships and dangers of the journey, the network of corruption that operates underground promising safe passage for a price, and all of the legal systems involved in preventing illegal border crossing, but of greatest interest to me, he portrays the many people involved, in all of the various roles, as human beings with all the same kinds of characteristics you might imagine having yourself. The Boston Globe reviewer, Tom Montgomery Fate, wrote of the book: "Urrea writes about US-Mexican border culture with a tragic and beautiful intimacy that has no equal."
Dying for a Drink of Water would be a good alternate title. Feeling sorrow and understanding for “all†the players in the tragedy. My deepest heartfelt sympathies to the families of those poor, brave men who died.Now Iï¸ will need to research and study why citizens of Mexico from these small villages are so poor they risk crossing. Just way too sad. Urrea gives enlightening statistics on correcting the false information about how much it costs to absorb “illegals†into the USA.
It's an interesting story, worth a read. The book is sometimes hard to follow; there are huge jumps back and forth in time and characters. In addition to these jumps, the varied pieces of information often seem scattered and some are never pulled together in the overall story. The author, multiple times, completely vilifies Border Patrol Agents. The author's wild accusations of misdeeds by Agents are never backed up by any evidence; they seem more like folk lure tales that illegal immigrants will understandably repeat and spread, but are simply untrue. For a book that is largely written as a documentary, why include these tall tales that are not, and most likely can't be, substantiated?
A book that hooks you from the start, is well written, and enlightening. Urrea shows how the issue of illegal immigration is both too simplistic (thinking a wall will solve our problems) and too complicated (forgetting the shared humanity) on both sides of the political spectrum.Thus book will challenge you long after you finish reading.
This is a book I would not have chosen to read and in fact the first few pages confirmed my fear it would be a depressing book about a depressing subject. I was wrong. The book had been chosen by my book group so I had to persist. Soon the book became surprisingly compelling even though the gruesome end was never in doubt. The author brilliantly tells the true story of a group of men who died (or nearly died) in the Arizona desert in May 2001.Luis Alberto Urrea does so by revealing meaningful details about all the people in this tragic event. He displays the diverse backgrounds of the Mexicans crossing the border--giving a visceral understanding or where they were actually and metaphorically coming from. The book might have stopped there with an emotional story of their pain and suffering and their appalling ignorance of the desert (many of the men had come from the lush wet tropics and had no idea of the importance of simple things like wearing a hat or not wearing black pants). But, to his credit, the author goes beyond that and presents background on all the players: the border patrol, the local residents who are plagued by problems resulting from people walking across the border, and the others involved in this dangerous and expensive activity. In sometimes poetic phrases we learn about the desert, the heat, stages of death by heat and thirst. The result is a realization of the true tragic quality of the illegal immigration problem. Everyone involved in this story labored under misconceptions or gross ignorance that led to a terrible outcome. Worse, there seems no clear path toward stopping or even tamping down the problem. All you can say after reading the book is you have a much better grasp of the issues facing the parties near the border. That may not be enough, but it is something worthwhile.
I am typically a person who dreads reading non-fiction, but Urrea has a masterful command over language that makes this book a thrilling ride--one that never felt like a chore, even in its darkest moments. Its topic is very dark, but the book does well in remembering that this is reality. Even its morbidity reflects the fact that the Yuma 14/Wellton 26 were real people with real desires and hopes.Read this book. Every 14.8 seconds, somebody dies crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, and this fascination with sealing our border has created spaces of death and loss. This book gives an earnest picture of one such space, one such time.
I've heard of Devil's Highway all my life ... driven through it without realizing. Even picked up a friend there once ... didn't realize... It's a story from the view of the Border Patrolmen about the illegal's. Also a mystery story as they track the origins of a great many dead 'walkers'. I'm not finished with the reading of it, but it's definitely a must read to understand the huge problem(s) involved.

It has given me information I wish I'd received "in the box" when I got my Explore Air. The author has taken pictures of her own Explore Air to visually show the material to which she is referring. She talks about older versions of the Cricut geneology, she describes the machine, she includes pictures from the Design Center to help with "getting started", she talks about necessary/helpful tools and supplies.I am very pleased with the book. Thank you, Amelia!
Although I previously owned the Cricut Personal (which I gave to a friend), I found it was too much work for things I wanted to create. I purchased the Cricuit Air 2 today and have create 5 projects my first day thanks to this book. This book is very informative, easy to read and gives step by step instructions and very good resources. I recommend this book to anyone who is new to the Cricut cutters or doesn’t feel comfortable using it. I definitely recommend it
I just love this book. Easy to understand and written in a language any one can understand. Lots of pictures and she has the same machine as I do so I can look from the picture to my machine. No reason to have any questions when you get done with this.
I am a new Cricut user, and I find that there is not much written material on the how-tos of the machine and system. The unit doesn't come with a manual, and that's unfortunate. There is a LOT to know about using the machine and how to design and create projects. I found this booklet (it's not large, thus, I am calling it a booklet) useful, but too pricey for what it gives. One complaint I have is the visuals she provides to "help" y ou understand the process. They are small screen shots that are either too small, too faint, or both. In either case, you can't READ them to help your understanding of what she is trying to tell you. I'd've given it 2-1/2 stars, 'cause I really don't see it as a strong 3-star.
Present. Arrived on time. She is excited to get her Cricut for Christmas. I gave it 4 stars because I don't know if will help her or not. I will definitely update once she uses the book.
I was very disappointed in the book. The instructions were not clear and the examples were poor print quality and were difficult to read. A waste of money.

This installment of the Dave Robicheaux series starts in the Katrina/Rita damage. It feels like the author witnessed the area firsthand and you can feel his sense of tragedy and the level of destruction (he likely was there at the time). I have enjoyed all of James Lee Burke's books. This one is not one of the best (Black Cherry Blues, for me), but is still just really good reading for me. The "bad guys" are not as creepy as other books, but really the villain in this one was the weather and the destruction wrought by the hurricanes. The people were almost supporting cast. It was recommended to me to read these in time sequence, which I have mostly been doing. I will finish the whole series. I do not completely agree with some critics who say that Burke's books become formulaic and predictable. They are an extension of him. His command of the English language is remarkable and I will eventually read every book he has written!
Southern Lousiana cannot be depicted in a book by someone who visited there once. James Lee Burke provides one of the most satisfying glimpses into a unique culture, dark practices, strange and unpronouceable foods, stirring music, a world dripping with booze, twisted by crime, and inhabited by impoverished people who live in the clutches of a culture that has produced mardigras, boudin, etoufee, and zydeco.Voodoo, drugs, sex, gambling, and names for common fish that no one has ever heard before; those things make up Southern Louisiana. But it's more than a culture that comprises races of such wonderous mix that music, food, jazz funerals, and the like are mere products of the creative minds of a myriad carefree souls.I applaud Burke for realizing that the story of Lousians is not a linear telling of history and present practices, or a before and after Katrina comparison, or painting a bleak picture of a subordinated people. No say me, it is a song sung by sea birds, to the rhythm of falling rain and storm winds, to the beat of large fish jumping for bugs and falling back into the water, and listened to by the ears of the soul amid the aroma of fried fish, boiling crabs, crawfish, and blood sausage.If you want to hear the song and experience one of the most descriptive and colorful literary journeys of your life, read not only this one, but all of Burke's novels. There are many people to hate, those that turn your stomach, those that you'd like to twist thir heads off, and those that you can't hate no matter how hard you try.One more thing. Not many authors can crawl inside the heads of sychopaths, an alcaholic, a Viet Nam Vet that has seen too much, a killer, rapist, a torturor, an ex-cop, and an impulsive partner that seems out of control. Burke lets it all hang out with these personas; and he does it like a pro or lay psychiatrist.You must read this book, let the language become an intregal part of the backdrop and get past it, be prepared to stay up late, and have great fun in the process.
â€New Orleans was a song that went under the waves.†Above all else, this is a gripping tale of how Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tried to rip away the soul of New Orleans. This has to be my favorite in the Robicheaux series by far. It has depth, a paralyzing taste of reality and the best villain yet! Ronald Bledsoe will not be forgotten easily. Beyond Dave, Molly, Alafair and Clete, even the sub-plots with Bertrand Melancon and Otis Baylor carry their own pathos and intrigue. This is one of the very best!
With Dave Robicheaux telling the story you can actually feel , see and smell Louisiana . You see everything through his eyes and his heart . Clete Purcell is an open wound that never heals . The love between the two friends keep both their wounds closed. Molly and Alafair make you part of their family . Every character becomes alive . You see how they live and good or bad , you understand them through Dave , especially through his heart and integrity ..But as Clete would say , it's only rock and roll .
Books about the Deep South are some of my most favorite to read--the heat and humidity always seem to just seep right through the pages with their passion and longing and this book is no exception.Dave Robicheaux is a Louisiana police detective trying to sort out a murder, a burglary and a variety of other crimes that are somehow connected. As Dave is trying to sort through the mess, evil comes into his own home and threatens his best friend, bail bondsman Clete, and adopted daughter. This book was the 17th in the series but I really didn't feel like I was missing anything.The book is set during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While I have read many books about this disaster as a focus or even setting, none made the horror of the crime spree aftermath so very real. The description of the destruction of New Orleans is what struck me most strongly about this book. It seemed to read like a tragedy, almost an ode, to a grand, beautiful lady whose prime time had somehow been robbed of her before her time. It was a police/procedural mystery that felt as if I were riding right along in Dave's cruiser. It's so realistic and gritty you can feel the sand and dirt swirling around in your brain. The mystery is full of sharp twists and turns and while sometimes these books are too technical for me, this one fit just right.And, just when you think you know who did it, you find out you didn't even know what 'it' is!I always love to discover a new author and a new detective to fall for--Dave Robicheaux is now on my "Most Wanted List"--I suppose I've have to go back and read all 16 before and the others since! A small price to pay for a great read.
