From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—When a girl named Lucy sees an ad in the paper selling unicorns for 25 cents, she sends off for one right away. Lucy has high expectations for her new unicorn, whom she plans to name Sparkle as she rides on his majestic back and impresses all of her friends. However, when Sparkle arrives, he is spotted, short, and mischievous and has fleas. At first Lucy wants to return him to the man she bought him from, but she soon warms up to him when she realizes that, despite his flaws, Sparkle is actually very sweet. Children will laugh at Sparkle's naughty antics but also root for him to win Lucy over, feel heartbroken when she initially chooses to return Sparkle, and cheer when the two are reunited at the end. This is a humorous and charming story about managing unrealistic expectations, choosing a pet, and acting responsibly. Young skillfully draws the endearingly scruffy Sparkle so that even though he more closely resembles an odd-looking "goat" than a unicorn, he is still undeniably adorable. The last page, in which a smiling Lucy declares, "Welcome Home!" and embraces a visibly happy Sparkle, is the perfect endnote. VERDICT This funny, heartfelt story about a girl and her not-so-perfect unicorn will be a hit for storytime or one-on-one sharing.—Laura J. Giunta, Garden City Public Library, NY

Review
"The pencil, pen, and watercolor illustrations, done in a simple, loose style, offer expressive, playful character poses. And Young hits all the visual beats, creating something likable and appealing...A tale about coming to love someone―or something―for who they are and not what one hopes them to be: a pleasant addition to the odd-couple shelf." ―Kirkus“She had to admit: sometimes he made her smile and sometimes he made her laugh,†writes Young (Don’t Eat the Baby!), whose storytelling and watercolor cartooning are spot-on in their comic timing. Her message to readers is clear: self-awareness and finding a soul mate don’t always come easily." ―Publishers Weekly

I just adore this book! It's a sweet theme and great illustrations. We all end up with the kind of pet we need instead of the one we wanted-great message. I am a teacher and can't wait to share this one with my Kinder students-I know they will love it too!
This is one of those great books that is clever enough to be a fun read for both the kids and the adult reader. It has just the right since of humor for our family. My 5 and 7 year old daughters loved it when we checked it out from the library. Perhaps because the younger one is a huge unicorn fan. But this is not your typical unicorn and princess tale. No princesses to be found and it is just, plain funny. My older daughter wanted to buy it to give as a gift to her little sister for her birthday. So now it is in our permanent collection, and I'll probably buy a few more as gifts for other kiddos in the same age range.
I purchased this book for a 5 year old who was able to read most of the book with some guidance. This book is adorable in story concept and illustrations!. Great for imagination, believing and moral. I also purchased the sequel by Amy Young, A New Friend for Sparkle. I loved the glittery lettering but it is only on the paper cover, not the Hard cover which wears easily. Great Book for Unicorn enthusiasts!.
I have been disappointed by many books. Even books that have great reviews I have found lacking. I would say this book is fairly short and pretty simple, but it has a sweet little message about how sometimes we grow to love somone even more the more we get to know them.
Ironically this book was a perfect fit for our daughter. Dark curly hair, unicorn obsessed(and had asked the Easter Bunny real unicorn), and her name is Lucy. When we read this she loved it, even named her stretchkin unicorn the Bunny brought Sparkle. Great story and cute pictures.
This book has adorable illustrations and a cute story. I love the size of the book as it is easy for my toddler to hold and turn the pages herself. It isn't always easy to love someone but you can always find good qualities, this book shows you just that - although Sparkle wasn't the Unicorn she wanted, he still made her laugh!
Pretty pictures and a cute tittle that’s how I can describe this book. Your better offf buying NOT NORMAN a goldfish story same concept better story.
This book is just a cute and sweet story about a girl and her unexpected goat. The illustrations are fabulous and the story is adorable with a sweet message.I bought this as a gift and was really happy with it.
